In his exhibition Concerning Scouting, Nährer explores the elements of scouting, a tradition shaped by both practical functions and symbolic meanings.
A central theme of this solo presentation is the examination of the symbols and practices associated with the scouting movement. Rooted in principles of self-reliance, community, and a connection to nature, scouting provides the conceptual framework for this body of work. Nährer investigates the relationship between badges, banners, and flags, which within scouting often function as markers of identity and symbols of belonging.
In his series Flags of Our Mothers, Nährer draws upon the visual language of semaphore flags, which have historically served as instruments of communication within scouting and beyond. These flags, composed of simple geometric forms, are transformed in Nährer’s paintings into powerful abstract symbols that simultaneously evoke histories of connection, exchange, and communication. This interplay between visual minimalism and historical and cultural references becomes a central challenge for the viewer.
Florian Nährer’s work represents a complex and multilayered examination of traditions, symbols, and forms. His paintings invite the viewer to look beyond the clarity of geometric structures and vivid colours in order to discover the deeper cultural and historical contexts embedded within them.
In Concerning Scouting, Nährer creates an artistic language that moves beyond the surface of abstraction, exploring questions of communication, community, identity, and belonging through a contemporary visual vocabulary.
